Bayside Health is a public health service delivering high-quality care across every stage of life for close to 1.2 million people living in metropolitan Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula, Koo Wee Rup, Bass Coast and Southern Gippsland. We have more than 15 main sites, including hospitals, centres and clinics that provide comprehensive care from welcoming newborns to supporting older people and a full range of services in between. The Digital Health division is responsible for enabling clinical staff to deliver timely, quality care to our patients and carers through innovative use of information technologies, and through strategic management of information and data across the organisation.
The Role – Position Summary
An exciting new permanent opportunity for a Head of Architecture has become available within the Strategy & Transformation team as part of Alfred Care Group’s Digital Health division. We are seeking an enthusiastic and passionate individual to lead our Architecture function and define how technology strategy drives outcomes across the organisation. This is a highly influential role providing strategic leadership and partnering closely with senior clinical leaders and technical product delivery teams to design a scalable, secure and future ready digital architecture for the Alfred Care Group, unified technology strategy roadmap and integrated IT operating model that supports the next phase of growth and expansion for Bayside Health.
You’ll set the vision, principles and technical guardrails that guide how we build, integrate and evolve our platforms, from our patient facing / customer systems to our internal clinical and corporate systems. You’ll also embed solution and domain architecture into product streams to support empowerment, speed to market and strong alignment with clinical goals. The organisation is undergoing a significant period of transformational change, and this role is key to shaping the foundations and future digital ambitions of a unified and adaptive digital health ecosystem that supports operational excellence, clinical innovation and person-centred care across Bayside Health.
Your key responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:
Define and own our enterprise architecture vision, principles and multi year technology strategy roadmaps
Create and maintain reference architectures and capability models across applications, data and technology
Establish and enforce architecture governance, standards, blueprints and design patterns
Provide oversight of non functional requirements, technology risk assessments and platform strategy
Review and approve solution designs to ensure alignment with enterprise direction
Coach, mentor and develop a team of enterprise, solution and technology domain architects
Embed architecture guardrails into product led agile delivery teams
Lead build vs buy decisions, technology selections and platform rationalisation across the enterprise
Maintain registers for enterprise decisions and technical debt reduction
Partner closely with Product, Engineering, Data, Security, Operations and Finance teams
Translate complex technical decisions into clear and compelling business narratives
Evaluate emerging technologies and lead strategic proof of concepts
Qualifications And Experience
10-15+ years in IT architecture and strategy roles, including 5+ years in architecture leadership and digital transformation (ideally in the public health sector or large highly complex regulated environments)
Tertiary qualifications (Bachelor’s degree or higher) in Health/Business/ or IT / Information Systems
Industry certifications in Enterprise Architecture or Agile (e.g. TOGAF, Zachman, CGEIT, SAFe).
Demonstrated expertise in enterprise architecture frameworks (e.g. TOGAF, SABSA, ADM, ITIL)
Strength in systems / design thinking, long term target state roadmap ownership and reference modelling
Demonstrated experience leading architecture or technology integration during M&A, restructures or major service transformations.
Experience presenting strategies to senior executive stakeholders and lead complex decision making
Experience embedding security, resilience and compliance protocols into solution lifecycles
Experience implementing IT target operating models with modern delivery methods such as Agile / SAFe, DevOps, CI/CD, cloud-native delivery, and how architecture supports these ways of working.
Experience leading and mentoring cross-functional architects in a product led, agile environment
Visionary leader with a growth mindset and demonstrated commitment to continuous learning
Exceptional communication, negotiation, problem solving and executive storytelling skills
Deep expertise and understanding of modern engineering practices, clinical and operational workflows, integration / interoperability standards (e.g. APIs, ESB/iPaaS, event-driven architecture, messaging), cybersecurity, cloud platforms and scalable data architecture models.
Advanced knowledge of emerging technology trends including Gen / AI / Agentic AI, ML / data science, advanced analytics, automation and their implications for healthcare.
Experience with the Cerner product suite and other clinical information systems and products (desirable)
