Job Description
Nexus Hospitals has a national network of private day and short stay hospitals committed to delivering high quality, patient centred care across Australia. We are seeking an experienced Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to provide senior clinical leadership and oversight across the Group.
This is a flexible, part-time role (approximately 40-50 hours per month) and may be engaged on an employment or contracted basis, depending on the preferred arrangement of the successful candidate.
The Role
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Medical Officer will provide strategic and operational medical leadership, with a strong focus on clinical governance, safety, and quality across the Nexus Hospitals network.
Key responsibilities include:
Providing executive level medical leadership across the organisation
Collaborate with the Chief Nurse and Director of Clinical Governance to oversee and enhance clinical governance frameworks.
Supporting accreditation, regulatory compliance, and quality improvement initiatives
Working closely with VMOs to ensure standards of high quality practice and conduct are maintained across the group
Advising the executive team and Board on clinical risk, safety, and performance
Attendance at hospital Medical Advisory Committees as required
Contributing to incident management, clinical review, and systemwide learning
Supporting a culture of clinical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement
Oversight of clinical trial applications and governance
About You
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
Registration as a medical practitioner in Australia
Specialist registration and private practice experience as a surgeon, anaesthetist, or physician (desirable but not essential)
Experience with implementing and managing adherence to Private Hospital By-Laws - or equivalent instruments of engaging Visiting Medical Practitioners / Specialists
Demonstrated experience in clinical governance, quality, and patient safety
Previous experience in a Chief Medical Officer, Medical Director, or similar senior leadership role (desirable)
Experience working with or alongside Medical Advisory Committees
Strong judgement, credibility, and the ability to influence at executive and Board level
Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
